Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that they will take legal action against former Spanish police commissioner Jose Manuel Villarejo who accused the club of bribing the referees in the past.
The Los Blancos in an official statement confirmed that the club have already contacted their lawyers to take legal action against Villarejo for the defamatory accusations he made against the club.
“The president of Real Madrid CF, Florentino Pérez, has ordered the immediate filing of judicial action against former Commissioner Villarejo for the false accusations [of Bribing referees] made on the Catalan radio station RAC1,” the club said in a brief statement.
Villarejo accused Madrid’s president Florentino Perez of bribing referees and also said that the 73-year-old is untouchable to the prosecutors.
"Anyone who dares to denounce Florentino would be suicidal. It is impossible to prosecute anything that affects Florentino Pérez,” he said.
“The ill-fated Rubalcaba, who was a Real Madrid fan, told me not to even think of going to the Madrid box because it is a tremendous television studio."
It must be noted that La Liga giants FC Barcelona are under investigation for suspected "active bribery" as part of a probe into suspected corruption spanning two decades at the refereeing committee.
The refereeing investigation has now been widened to include Barcelona as a suspect. Investigating judge Joaquin Aguirre Lopez said earlier in September the club may have benefited from graft.
In March, prosecutors filed a complaint over alleged payments of more than 7.3 million euros ($7.8 million) over 17 years to firms owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, who was vice-president of the RFEF's refereeing committee from 1993 to 2018.
On the other hand. Real Madrid will Napoli in a UEFA Champions League (UCL) encounter at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples on Tuesday night.
The club will be looking forward to continuing their great form after beating Girona 3-0 courtesy of goals by Joselu, Aurilien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham at the weekend.
